Troubleshooting (start here)

On this page

Most problems have a quick fix. Start with the five checks below, then find your symptom.

First, rule things out

  1. Update AjaxPress, and AjaxPress Pro if you use it, to the latest version. Many reported problems are already fixed.
  2. Clear every cache: your caching plugin, your host’s cache, Cloudflare, and your browser (or use a private window).
  3. Test logged out, in a private window. Load Frontend Normally for Admins turns AjaxPress off for administrators, so you may not be seeing it at all.
  4. Open the browser console (F12, then Console) and look for red errors while you click around.
  5. Turn AjaxPress off for a moment: switch off Settings → AjaxPress → Basic → Enable SPA for Frontend. If the problem stays, it isn’t AjaxPress. Switch it back on afterwards.

AjaxPress doesn’t seem to do anything

  • Check that Settings → AjaxPress → Basic → Enable SPA for Frontend is on.
  • Test in a private window. You may be logged in as an administrator with Load Frontend Normally for Admins on.
  • Your theme must call wp_footer() before </body>. Almost every theme does, but some very minimal or custom themes don’t.
  • An error in another script can stop everything after it. Check the console.
  • Another plugin that also does ajax navigation or page transitions (such as Swup, Barba, or a theme’s own “ajax page loading” option) will conflict. Use one or the other.
  • A plugin that delays JavaScript can hold AjaxPress back until the visitor first scrolls or moves the mouse. See Caching and optimisation plugins.

Update AjaxPress to 2.4.2 or later.

The Back button reloads the page, or skips a page

Update AjaxPress. Block themes such as Twenty Twenty-Five had a Back button conflict that was fixed in 2.3.4, and duplicate history entries were fixed in 2.3.3. If you’ve turned on the ajaxpress_keep_block_navigation filter, turn it off again.

Logging in fails, or loops back to the login form

Turn on Settings → AjaxPress → Basic → Full Page Reload on Login & Registration. See Full page reload on login and registration.

Logged out, or something added to the cart, without a click

Prefetch (AjaxPress Pro) loads pages when their link is hovered. Links that do something when loaded, such as Log out or Add to cart, need to be in Exclude Links. See Prefetch on hover.

A page builder’s editor won’t load

Turn off Enable SPA for Admin Dashboard. See Page builders.
